Free to a good home

Thank you for all the comments, the sock yarn was mailed out to the winner on Monday 18th April.

I was going out of town this weekend, and I wanted to start a pair of socks to take with me. I pulled the best sock yarn I own out of the stash thinking "maybe this time it will work." It’s Fortissima Colori (colour 9074, Cabana). I’ve tried to make socks with it before and ripped it out. I tried twice this weekend and neither time worked. There is only one conclusion: The yarn hates me. It rejected my best bamboo needles. It doesn’t want to be my socks and it wants to leave. Rather than inflict further trauma on it, I’m offering the two balls to some experienced sock knitter, someone who has knit a few pairs of fingering weight socks and may be able to tame the yarn.

Yarn for trade.

Leave a comment if you’re interested. If I get multiple comments, I’ll do some kind of random drawing. I have knit two small swatches out of one ball, but that’s all I’ve used, the other ball is untouched. I’ll mail it anywhere in the US. Just promise you’ll email me a picture of the socks it becomes. I know they’ll be lovely to behold.

  1. Looks lovely. I enjoyed my socks that I made, and I enjoyed the socks I got… If no-one else wants it I’d be happy to give it a try 🙂

  2. Oooh!! I’d like to have it…I’m a relatively experienced sockmaker, I guess, and I get along pretty well with fingering weight self patterning yarn. So please enter me in the drawing.

  3. Oh man, I have some of that!

I attempted my first (crocheted) sock with it… only to put socks behind me for months before reattempting with a different yarn! I won’t touch that stuff anymore. 🙂

Hope it goes to a good home!

  4. I would love the yarn if no better home comes up – I just knit my first pair of socks in this and am in loooooooooooooove.

  5. Norma sent her readers over here, Hi!

I think you should try making some little socks out of it. I used that yarn to make my first socks for a baby and they turned out very very cute. I’d happily take it off your hands, too, but maybe you should give it a try.

  6. I love the colors! I’ve only knit one pair of socks, but I’d be willing to try a second with this lovely yarn.

  7. Oh!!! This is my favorite sock yarn! I’ve made a pr of socks, a granddaughter sweater, & a pair of fingerless mitts out of it! You just have to hold your tongue right *just so* in order to use it…

I could give it a very lovely home…

  8. I’d love to try this yarn. I’ve made tons of socks, but always with a bulkier weight yarn. I’d appreciate the challenge.

  9. I’d love to give it a try. I’ve knit 5 pair of fingering weight socks and am finishing up my sixth pair. All but 1 pair have been gifts and have been very well received.

If you are so inclined – I would give this yarn and the resulting socks a very good home and even send picture(s).

  10. i’d also love to attempt to tame the sockyarn…unfortunately this wool-tamer lives in canada! alas, the cruelness of fate…

  11. Before you give up and give it away… Have you tried knitting the socks on two circs? Maybe the yarn just doesn’t like dpns…

  12. It’s a pretty colorway. Are you sure you don’t want to give it another try? Maybe on smaller needles?

I’m on WP, too, and would be interested to know if you’ve found a good gallery plug in.

    Nice finding your blog!

  13. Hi there. “Norma” sent me. She said you had some “sock yarn” you were “giving away”. I’ve knit socks before and would love to have the “yarn”. I must tell you I haven’t been able to do them on bamboo needles – only metal. The yarn won’t slide for me on bamboo.

    I’ll trade you for a marble. 🙂

  14. I’d LOVE the yarn, and I think I can tame it.

    *cracks her whip*

I promise action shots of the socks once made.

    I make cute socks. :):):):)

  15. I’m not so much an experienced sock knitter as just a newly obsessive and eager one. So I’ll happily throw my name in the pot too!

  16. Oh! I used this colorway before, to make sox for my brother. I’m sorry it’s not working for you. I’d be happy to give it a good home and make a pair for me. There’s something about bamboo needles and fingering weight yarn that I find VERY comforting.

  17. I’ve blogged recently about the decline of my own relationship with a sock (TSFKAGW, or “the sock formerly known as going well”) I have a counseling session scheduled for Thursday (during SnB) and if you’d like, I’d be happy to take in your yarn for some tough love.

I’m sorry, because I do feel your pain.

  18. I am not an experienced sock knitters – I have knitted two pairs so far and I am knitting my third and four pair right now (don’t ask, I have knitting ADD). So, I would love to knit a fifth pair!

  19. I’ve successfully knitted with this yarn in the past, so even though I’ve only knitted a few pairs of socks, I’d love to give it a go!

  20. Gee, it’s nice yarn. What kind of problems were you having exactly? Is it that you just don’t like fingering? I love the stuff. I won’t necesarily throw somebody down for it, but I also don’t turn away free sock yarn. It deserves a good home.

  21. :::conspiratorially whispering::: Norma sent me.

I’d love to give it a try…those skeins look like they’d make some mighty colorful socks! I’m sorry they made you sad…

  22. For some reasopn my comment didn’t post, so if by chance it did and this is a second one, then…ooh!ooh! pick me! I’d love to try to sock it the yarn!

  23. Hi,

I don’t have a blog, but I’d love to make your sock yarn into socks. Socks are about the only thing I ever knit, and I’ve had good luck with Colori in the past.

  24. I’ve had the same thing happened to me with very, very thin Kroy sock just didn’t work for me!! But…I would love to give your Fortissima a whirl! Let me know!! Merci!

  25. He asked first, and I hardly ever come here. So unless a zillion people come here and whimper, give it to Timothy.

What’s the problem with it? Or is it just one of those things?

  26. I’d love to give it a try! Thanks for the offer, and I hope you get lots of comments and that a deserving sock-knitter “wins” the giveaway.

  27. I’m not a sock knitter but use such yarn to make baby gifts so I’d be glad to take that misbehaving yarn off your hands.

  28. Ooh la, that looks nice! I would love some itty-bitty sock yarn! I knit socks for my son, because boys’ socks are so boring usually. I do live in Canada — I hope that doesn’t disqualify me!

  29. Perhaps you should give the yarns one or two more try … sometimes it happens. But if you are generous enough to give them to me, why not? hehehe …

  30. poor yarn… poor, poor yarn… would you like to come live with me? I would take very good care of you. please let me rescue you from your former life!

  31. The sock yarn looks lovely–I haven’t had any problems with Fortissima Colori in the past. I would love to give your skeins a try.

  32. Hi! I would love to be able to use this to try out a new sock pattern! I love the Fortissima and i too had problems the first time I used it! Send it to me please!

  33. Waaah! That’s the exact yarn I ordered from The, which was at first back-ordered, THEN my husband lost his job (of TEN years) which was a total shock, and I had to cancel the order altogether, and since my yarn buying prospects for the future look mighty slim indeed, I think you should take pity on me! I have knit a lot of socks, but most of them have been gifted of course, and I have only, like, 3 or 5 pairs for myself. Did I mention I have TWO teen daughters in the house? Is any of this working? Have I whined sufficiently? Does anyone feel as sorry for me as I do?!? LOL! I just could use a little kindness right now!

    bye for now,

  34. Oh! I’ve been eyeing that yarn for a while, and would love the opportunity to make some socks. If it’s not too late? If it is, no problem. I think it’s fab that people just..give yarn away!

  35. This is one of my favorite sock yarns and I don’t get to use it often as I have no readily available resource other than ordering it from somewhere.

I would be happy to knit it up!

  36. Hi there! I’ve made some socks with fingering-weight wool before, but I haven’t gotten to try a jaquard yet – which is something I’d really love to do! It’s very difficult to get them here, my only yarn store is Wal-Mart 😦

  37. Oooh. I would love to give this a try. I just finished my first pair with Lion Brand Magic Stripes. (broadripple from knitty) I promise I will send pics but have to warn that I am not a fast knitter.

  38. See how far your offer has gone?? I’m writing to you from Brazil and even so you stated that you would send the yarn anywhere IN the US… here I am… applying for the job!

I would love to give this adorable yarn a new home…

  39. I’ve made several pairs of socks and plan to make many more. I’d love to be in the running for your yarn. Thanks

  40. Well, beings that yesterday (the 13th) was my birthday and most of my friends and family forgot, I thought this would make a nice birthday present to myself – an entry into your drawing. Thanks for the opportunity! Beautiful colors!

  41. Hi! Found your blog while searcing for Christian knitting blogs. I love to knit socks. I knit socks before I started knitting sweaters! I haven’t used that yarn before, and would love to have it if you draw my name. I hope your next yarn if more friendly towards you!

  42. I just loved the colors! I will make my third pair of socks if you choose to send this yarn to a far land (; I live in Brazil, South America, and we don’t see this kind of yarn very often, it’s usually one color each yarn.

  43. I love the yarn. I have knitted a few pairs of sox. Nothing too fancy, but I would like to try this yarn and knit some sox for my daughter. If I am not too late, count me in.

  44. My mother made a beautiful pair socks. If you want I’ll send you one for model. And if you want you can send her the yarn you like she will made one special for you !

It will be a pleasure has a work made by my mother there in USA.

  45. I’d like receive something from you, because a love very much to do all the things with my hands.

If you choose me I’ll be very glad and your gift will make happy many people in Brazil.

  46. I do a lot of fingering weight sock knitting, as you can see from my blog. I really like Fortissima Socka; as the self-patterning yarns go, it is among my favourites. I’ll happily pay for shipping, and if you like I’ll send you something delightful from Singapore as a gift.
