Dealing with comments

I love blog comments. But what’s the polite way to respond? A reply comment, or an email? Which would you prefer? I like the email reply, but I don’t always get to everyone who comments, and sometimes you need to answer a comment’s question on the blog. Please drop me a comment and let me know. Thanks!

(I tried putting a poll on here but they either didn’t load, or the results page was full of unsavoury ads. So I’m doing it the old fashioned way)

  1. It depends on the comment – in some cases I have turned around and made a second post to answer the comment because it was something that needed to be said to the wider world. If the comment needs to be answered but the answer can wait until someone clicks into the comments, then drop a comment yourself. In the rare cases where it needs it, an email would be good for private feedback. So my vote is a “suck it and see” on a comment-by-comment basis. 🙂

  2. Put me down as “it depends.”

If there is a reason to take the conversation offline, I reply by email.

If the conversation is public, and of potential interest to other bloggers and commenters, I reply in the comments.

I do try to reply to all comments, in one fashion or another. It creates an atmosphere conducive to more comments, and it is consistent with my “brick and mortar” hostessing style.

  3. The trouble with a comment reply is that the original commenter may not see it, unless your blogging software emails the person you are replying to (which implies threaded comments a-la LJ)

    so, it depends.

  4. A comment are simply just that, a comment with no reply necessary or expected. When I comment on a blog, I do not expect a reply. When someone is kind enough to leave a comment on my blog, if I have time and the inclination, then I reply. I prefer the ‘no strings attached’ method of blog commenting…
