Scale, and lack thereof

The BBC website says we're in for heavy snow on Wednesday.  Local radio said it would be an inch of snow in the morning.  My English sense of scale has been irreparably damaged.  A hundred miles is something you drive in an afternoon, not a place at the end of the earth.  Heavy snow is six inches overnight.  But you'll never convince me it's not pronounced "aluminium."  Never.
